Viral Communications at the Media Lab is all about how systems scale. The group premiered scalable video in the '90s, built scalable mesh radios into the 2000s, and now considers how AI will scale as it becomes part of everyday life. We are at an inflection point. We are inventing machines that are more than open-loop amplifiers of human effort—they are becoming closed-loop.  The challenge is to build a symbiotic loop in which both people and machines form a mutually supportive pair. The group's researchers go past P2P and consider P2M:  relationships between people and machines, as creative, exploratory partners. They now build scalable collaboration systems. They show application and impact for how we learn beyond schools, how we engage in commerce beyond web3, and how society interacts.
