MLTalks with Jan Fuller and Joi Ito

Jan Fuller is an expert in digital forensics: investigating and analyzing evidence from computers and digital devices. She spent nearly 30 years as a forensic investigator, with a focus on sex trafficking, fraud, and endangered children. In this talk, she and Media Lab director Joi Ito will discuss the tenacity, creativity, and ingenuity it took to navigate jurisdictions, complex data, and a changing criminal landscape during the rise of the digital age. 

Currently, some departments are experiencing a backlog of unresolved cases that stay unattended for a year or more due to the lack of resources and useful technology within the law enforcement departments. Jan wants to find a solution, and is taking a collaborative approach with law enforcement, software and hardware developers, and others to try to solve this and other issues through technology.

Bio
Jan Fuller recently retired as Senior Digital Forensics Investigator for the Redmond Police Department in Washington State and is pursuing projects related to improving law enforcement capabilities related to digital crime. She began conducting forensic examinations in 2003 and fondly recalls the days when 1GB was a lot of data. She has analyzed data from thousands of electronic devices related to a wide nature of crime types.

She is a member of IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) and serves on the Computer Crime and Digital Evidence Committee). She serves on the Board for CTIN (Computer Technology Investigators Northwest). She is certified by IACIS (International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists) and FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) to conduct digital forensic investigations, and she enjoys coaching and mentoring students who are pursuing careers in the field of digital forensics.
