Local food systems face a growing challenge: while demand for sustainable and locally produced food is increasing, many small-scale producers struggle to reach a sufficiently large customer base. At the same time, consumers, particularly those without access to private vehicles, often face barriers to accessing these products.
This project explores how logistics networks can help address both challenges simultaneously. Rather than viewing freight transport solely as a source of environmental impacts, the study investigates how it can also serve as enabling infrastructure, supporting more accessible, resilient, and sustainable local food systems.
Developed as a preliminary pilot study, the research focused on the distribution of locally produced organic food. It examined how emerging collaborative distribution networks could connect producers and consumers more effectively, expanding market opportunities for local farmers while improving access to sustainable food products across the region. Particular attention was given to strengthening collaboration among producers, enabling them to collectively offer a wider variety of products through shared distribution.
More broadly, the study suggests that logistics can play an important role in regional development strategies. By integrating logistics with social, environmental, and economic objectives in transport planning, distribution networks can support local economies, reduce the need for passenger trips to access local food, and contribute to more sustainable territorial development.
