This research addresses vehicle rebalancing—a critical challenge in shared micro-mobility systems—using the MIT Autonomous Bicycle with both self-driving and manual modes. Urban mobility systems are increasingly moving toward shared, lightweight, and autonomous vehicles with decentralized planning solutions. The study proposes a fully decentralized approach inspired by stigmergy, a bio-inspired mechanism where autonomous bicycles self-organize rebalancing through indirect communication.
