This project transforms light into physical artifacts.  I developed a custom software systems to capture images of sunlight in the built environment and transform them into three-dimensional sculptures.  The aim of the work is to create meaningful physical artworks that reflect the nuanced shapes and subtle aesthetic qualities of natural light.

Motivation

I take attention to the way light influences our experience of space and use the feeling it evokes as a source of creative inspiration.

Observation

This project started by mindfully observing a building throughout the day.  I walk around it and experience its spatial qualities, while searching for moments in time with light that evoke an emotion.

The lobby of building E14 at the Media Lab exhibits a beautiful and expressive sunrise in the morning during summer.

Implementation

I recorded these moments and process the footage using code and computer vision.  I spatialized the data to produce a three-dimensional form that represents the movement of light over time.

I mindfully observe the spaces I inhabit throughout the day, keeping myself open to encountering locations and moments with light that evoke a thought or emotion, or tell a story about the architecture.
