Impact.AI: K-12 AI Literacy

Randi Williams

Today’s artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are changing how many people play, work, learn, and govern themselves. Due to this rapid technological change, tech and education leaders must consider how to prepare a diverse citizenry to thrive in the emerging age of AI. We propose Impact.AI - AI curricula and educational platforms that support K-12 students in fostering identities as technosocial change agents while they learn about AI.

AI Literacy Framework

The Impact.AI literacy framework covers the AI concepts, practices, and perspectives that align with a technosocial change agent identity. This framework will inform the development of middle school AI curricula that empower students to become conscious consumers, ethical engineers, and informed advocates of AI.

AI Literacy Curricula

The Impact.AI AI Literacy Framework informs the design of middle school AI curricula. These curricula are full of hands-on activities where students dive into the technical and ethical knowledge they should know to be empowered digital citizens in the age of AI.

The curricula cover self-driving cars, chatbots, machine learning, algorithmic audits, mental health, and harmful societal biases. The materials for each curriculum include educator guides, teacher training, and low-barrier but powerful AI education tools.

One of the longest-standing examples of these curricula, How to Train Your Robot, has been used by about 50 teachers and hundreds of students over the past four years.

AI Education Tools

Finally, these curricula are supported by AI scaffolding tools. We are developing a suite of tools to support teachers and students as they learn about AI. Integrating automatic scaffolding tools into our AI programming platform will enhance student learning and allow us to help students when they get stuck. The three areas we focus on are technical, creative, and reflective scaffolding.
