Principal Research Scientist Shuguang Zhang has been elected as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The Academy’s mission is to stimulate cross-disciplinary collaboration between reputable scientists of all disciplines, leading artists, and practitioners of governance. Their purpose is to analyze important societal challenges and help solve complex issues for the future wellbeing of Europeans.

The Academy brings together over 2,000 eminent scholars and practitioners, among them 34 Nobel Prize winners, from across Europe.  Zhang becomes one of the few non-European members; he has had several close collaborations with European scientists over the last 30 years, publishing joint papers and mentoring students and postdocs.

The Protectors of the Academy include several Heads of State. Its list of Honorary Senators comprises many distinguished leaders, such as former Prime Ministers or Ministers from various countries, former Presidents of the Commission of the European Union, and others.

Zhang says: "The election into the European Academy of Sciences and Arts is a recognition of my continuous, curiosity-driven research activities, which have had a significant impact on generating and disseminating new scientific knowledge and stimulating the knowledge-based economy that benefits society."
