City Science Lab @ Gipuzkoa Announced

On February 28, 2023 the MIT City Science team hosted an event to formally announce the start of the City Science Lab@Gipuzkoa, a region in northern Spain bordering France and the Bay of Biscay. The MIT team was joined by a delegation from Gipuzkoa including: Jabier Larrañaga Garmendia, the Regional Councilor for Economic Promotion, Tourism and Rural Environment, Jon Gurrutxaga Mongelos, the General Director of Innovation and Internationalization of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Ane Insausti Altuna, the General Manager of the MUBIL Foundation, Raul Antón, the Dean of Tecnun University and Iñigo Gutierrez, the Development Director at Tecnun University. 


The event included a ceremonial signing of a three year agreement with the MIT City Science group, the Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa and Mubil Fundazioa. Teams will research new systems and strategies for communities with the aim to develop and test experimental projects related to mobility and open innovation. Tecnun University of Navarra will also play a role as a project collaborator. 

During the event Kent Larson presented a history of the collaboration to date and an overview of potential City Science research. Jabier Larrañaga Garmendia introduced Gipuzkoa and shared several innovative initiatives and strategic projects in the region. Jon Gurrutxaga Mongelos presented on the R&D efforts of the region and Ane Insausti Altuna presented an overview of the work and research of the Mubil Foundation. 

In addition to the event on the 28th, the teams also gathered throughout the week for tours of multiple MIT departments, meetings with other MIT faculty, City Science demos and a brainstorming session focused on the Gipuzkoa region . 

Several MIT team members have been essential in setting up this collaboration under the direction of Kent Larson. Work to date includes discussing initial research questions, facilitating conversations with stakeholders, and coordinating events. MIT team members include Naroa Coretti Sanchez, Maitane Iruretagoyena, Luis Alonso, Ainhoa Genua Cervino, Teresa Olano, Cristian Panzarini, and Maggie Church.

Tecnun-Engineering School will be the headquarters, together with Mubil, of the innovation laboratory 'City Science Lab Gipuzkoa' of MIT - Universidad de Navarra
