Responsible AI: A perspective from the trenches

We hope you'll join us for this segment of the Media Lab Perspective Series, where Senior Research Scientist Andrew Lippman will welcome Dr. Joaquin Quiñonero Candela in discussing "Responsible AI: A perspective from the trenches." In this fireside chat, Dr. Lippman will discuss with Dr. Quiñonero-Candela the lessons he learned from 15 years building and deploying AI at massive scale, first at Microsoft and then at Facebook. The discussion will focus on some of the risks and difficult ethical tradeoffs that emerge as AI gains in power and pervasiveness.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Joaquin Quiñonero Candela serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership on AI, an organization interested in the societal consequences of artificial intelligence, and is a member of the Spanish Government’s Advisory Board on Artificial Intelligence.

Until September 2021, Joaquin was the Distinguished Technical Lead for Responsible AI at Facebook, where he led the technical strategy for areas like fairness and inclusiveness, robustness, privacy, transparency, and accountability. Before this, he built and led the AML (Applied Machine Learning) team at Facebook, driving product impact at scale through applied research in machine learning, language understanding, computer vision, computational photography, augmented reality, and other AI disciplines. AML also built the unified AI platform that powers all production applications of AI across the family of Facebook products.

Prior to Facebook, he built and taught a new machine learning course at the University of Cambridge (together with Carl Rasmussen), worked at Microsoft Research, and conducted postdoctoral research at three institutions in Germany, including the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. He received his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark.

Joaquin is currently taking a break to fully support his wife with rebuilding her career, and to enjoy their kids before they all leave the nest. He recently resigned from Facebook after 9.5 amazing years in order to create the space he needs.
