Signs is an instant messenger design philosophy and implementation. It aims to reduce confusion while increasing expressive power through a suite of novel design features. These features provide native structural elements in the conversation that free the user from sub-optimally performing meta-linguistic tasks in the same text-only chat space. Specifically, Signs aims to facilitate repair of sequencing problems, reduce ambiguity, and use the persistent chat log as a backdrop for new communication acts.
