This project investigates the nature of mental representations of musical structure through cognitive study and machine modeling. These models create a core for systems that can organize sounds in a manner consistent with human aesthetic reasoning, without relying on preset rules of any given "artistic style." The emphasis is on identifying musical structures through perceptual processes and recognition, in contrast to modeling reasoning based on musical training.
