T-Voks: The Singing and Speaking Theremin, by alum and research affiliate Xiao Xiao of the Tangible Media group, received second place at the 2022 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

This project was a collaboration with Grégoire Locqueville, Christophe d'Alessandro, and Boris Doval of Sorbonne University. 

Additional members of the Media Lab community who have also been recognized during the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition include:

  • Research scientist Daniel Novy in 2014 for his project BubbleSynth, which was named as a semifinalist
  • Opera of the Future alum Akito van Troyer in 2017 for the project Material and Magnet—Rhythm and Timbre (MM-RT), which received the People's Choice Award for Most Unusual Musical Instrument
