As a recognized expert on the African Space Agency (AfSA), which officially launched this year after a decade of incubation with the African Union, Media Lab Professor Danielle Wood has recently participated in several interviews about the agency with global news outlets.
More than 20 African countries have space programs, and AfSA will help to coordinate their efforts and serve as a primary point of contact for international partners. In Nature, Professor Wood says "It’s a new era. Where in the past, it may have seemed that the opportunities were outside Africa, right now we can say there’s many opportunities for collaboration inside Africa."
Professor Wood also spoke to Bloomberg and Il Sole 24 Ore about the launch, focusing on how it may help member nations share satellite data and tackle climate challenges.
In a separate recent interview with Bloomberg, Professor Wood highlighted AfSA as an example of a new, global era of space exploration. "There is innovation happening on every continent right now," she said. "We will see a lot of benefits."
