Work to focus on enabling direct wireless communication from underwater to the air.

Fadel Adib, assistant professor at the MIT Media Lab and founding director of the Signal Kinetics research group, received one of the Office of Naval Research's 2019 Young Investigator Awards. The highly competitive award recognizes early-career scientists whose academic achievements promise major scientific breakthroughs that support the mission and members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

The award will support Adib's research on "Wireless Communication Through the Water-Air Interface." This research can enable a variety of applications, including submarine-to-airplane communication, finding missing airplanes, and ocean scientific exploration.

Adib is one of 25 Young Investigators chosen this year, and the only awardee from MIT.  The award recipients will share $16.5 million in funding to continue their research.
