Michiel Bakker

Michiel is an MIT Computer Science PhD student and a research assistant in the Human Dynamics group at the MIT Media Lab, where he is supervised by Alex 'Sandy' Pentland. His research lies at the intersection of machine learning and computational social science, while focusing on a broad range of topics ranging from algorithmic fairness and privacy to human-computer interaction and deep learning. 

He is a native of Amsterdam and holds a bachelor's and master's degree in physics from TU Delft, where he worked and published on quantum computing at QuTech and IBM Q. Prior to continuing his education at MIT, he co-founded an e-commerce startup in London. At MIT, Michiel is supported by a Jacobs Presidential Fellowship.
