Authors: Mehak Sarang, Chelsea Robinson, Ariel Ekblaw, J. Guglin

Symposium: D3. 18th IAA SYMPOSIUM ON BUILDING BLOCKS FOR FUTURE SPACE EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Session: 1. Strategies & Architectures as the Framework for Future Building Blocks in Space Exploration and Development

We presented the new Lunar Open Architecture, a tool for roadmapping in the space industry, discussing the need for greater information sharing and collaboration in the next phase of lunar exploration.

Astronaut Ethnography: A Design Research Approach to Microgravity

Authors: Sanjana Sharma, Sands Fish, Ariel Ekblaw

Symposium: 31st IAA SYMPOSIUM ON SPACE AND SOCIETY

Session: Sharing space achievements and heritage: space museums and societies

We presented our findings from an astronaut & cosmonaut ethnography, which was based on our interviews of nine current and former astronauts from a variety of countries, who have lived on the ISS. We discuss how astronauts improvise comfort and care for themselves and one another while living in orbit. Using design research methods, we suggest future speculative as well as actionable opportunities to better design for the breadth of human needs in space.
