Team Space Enabled hosts NASA Water Resources Program Team Meeting
The NASA Water Resources program area is part of the Earth Action activity within NASA's Earth Science Division. Program areas within Earth Action help to apply satellite Earth Observation capability - from space, from the air and from the ground - to support environmental management. The Water Resources program area funds researchers from academia, NASA and beyond to help discover, develop, and demonstrate new practical uses for NASA’s Earth observations in the water resources management community. The NASA Water Resources program area hosts an annual meeting primarily for the funded researchers carrying out projects on applying NASA data with specific use cases.
Prof Wood and Team Space Enabled are hosting the 2024 meeting at the MIT Media Lab. This meeting will convene the NASA Earth Action / Applied Sciences Water Resources community to highlight the progress and impacts achieved by projects supported by the program. The meeting will include presentations from projects and partners, and opportunities for discussion around shared challenges and emerging opportunities that are important to the community. The NASA Water Resources Program Team Meeting will be held from Sept. 17-19, 2024. We encourage participants to join us in person at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, MA, and will also support virtual participation. Project team members, partners and students are also welcome to attend.
Prof Wood has been funded by the NASA Water Resources Program since 2021 for a project in cooperation with the Angolan national space agency (GGPEN). The project applies NASA data from the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive ) satellite to build dynamics maps of drought and couple that data with socioeconomic data to find regions of high drought vulnerability. More information can be found here about the project in Angola to design a Drought Decision Support System. As part of the project, Prof Wood has visited Angola multiple times to speak at technical conferences and coordinate with local stakeholders. The project is an example application of the EVDT Systems Engineering Framework which guides the design of a space application.
A working agenda (subject to change) is shared below for the event. Members of the MIT Community are welcome to attend.
