Tod Machover Explores AI, Music, and Humanity in Virtual Conversation for Philadelphia Artists

On January 27, MIT Media Lab Faculty Director, Muriel R. Cooper Professor of Music and Media and Director of the Opera of the Future group, Tod Machover was invited by the The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage  to engage in a  Zoom conversation with an audience of Philadelphia-based composers, professional musicians, and music presenters. The discussion explored his creative practice, his perspective on artificial intelligence as a potential collaborator, and his commitment to centering human experience in a world increasingly shaped by complex technologies and emerging media. 

Machover’s work bridges music, technology, nature, and people. In addition to composing groundbreaking music, he develops AI systems that prioritize cultural sensitivity and empower musicians to expand the potential of music-making. His approach emphasizes collaboration and exploration, inviting both human creativity and technological innovation to coexist in the artistic process.

The event was hosted by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, a multidisciplinary grantmaker dedicated to nurturing a vibrant and diverse cultural ecology in the Philadelphia region. Pew supports organizations and artists whose imaginative programs, events, and artistic work contribute to making Philadelphia a hub for culture. Beyond grantmaking, Pew offers capacity-building programs that foster dialogue about issues central to contemporary artistic practice, with many participants drawn from the city’s vibrant musical community.
