The Atlantic Festival

Professor Pattie Maes, who directs the Fluid Interfaces research group at the MIT Media Lab, is a speaker at The Atlantic Festival this year. She will participate in a panel discussion about the importance of understanding how the use of artificial intelligence (AI) impacts people.

The Progress Summit | The Future of AI, Robotics, and Human-Machine Interaction

How do we solve the world’s most important problems? Join us as we celebrate science, technology, and the latest inventions and innovations shaping our world, and hear from researchers, technologists, curious people, and trailblazers navigating the complexities and opportunities these advancements entail. We'll unpack the effects of social media and technology on children and society with the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. We’ll explore the world of quantum computing with Google Quantum AI COO Charina Chou and investigate the future of artificial intelligence, robotics, and human-machine interaction with AI pioneers Rodney Brooks and Pattie Maes. And we’ll envision the future of work and cities with the economic historian Dror Poleg and the urban-policy expert Diana Lind. Atlantic staff writers Derek Thompson and Jerusalem Demsas will lead these conversations.

This session will also feature a conversation produced by our underwriter Calm. David Ko, the CEO and a board member of Calm, will explore how we manage—not solve—the mental-health crisis in America, and how digital tools and a new outlook can help turn the tide on mental-health management with The Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson.
