MIT Program in Media Arts and Sciences celebrates Black History Month with a film screening of Neptune Frost.

In an otherworldly e-waste camp made of recycled computer parts, a subversive hacking collective attempts a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources—and its people. When an intersex runaway (Neptune, played by both Elvis Ngabo and Cheryl Isheja) and an escaped coltan miner (Matalusa, played by Kaya Free) find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. With hypnotic visuals and original songs composed by musician and co-director Saul Williams, this celestial cyber-musical offers a radically bold vision of power, exploitation, and love.

Q + A with MIT Professor Sandy Alexandre to follow.

Pizza dinner provided.

Co-sponsored by: MIT ICEO, Black Graduate Student Association, LBGTQ+ Services, Literature, Comparative Media Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

This film will also kick-off the 2023 Women Take the Real film festival. This annual film festival is a collaborative effort among Women's and Gender Studies departments involved in the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality (as well as select institutions/universities aligned with its mission) that features films directed by women and about issues relating to gender, race, sexuality, class and/or feminism. The focus is on intellectual investigation of these issues as well as visibility for women’s contributions to the film industry.

All films are free and open to the public. RSVP is required for building access.

Any visitor who does not have an MIT Kerberos account may use a Tim Ticket QR code to access the building which will be sent to registered attendees before the event.
