A number of Media Lab and MIT researchers participated in the Scalable HCI Symposium 2026. Emphasizing open hardware, accessibility, and scalable research, the symposium connects academia and industry to examine how Shenzhen’s ecosystem can enable new forms of collaboration, production, and impact in HCI.

Media Lab @ Scalable HCI Symposium 2026
The 10 Research At Scale participants presented their work:
Ben Weiss (Responsive Environments), Char Stiles (Future Sketches), Jake Read (Center for Bits and Atoms), Jessica Stringham (Future Sketches), Jonny Cohen (City Science), Michelle Kim (Fluid Interfaces), Miranda Li (Personal Robots), Sam Chin (Responsive Environments), Shengtao Shen (Future Heritage, Arch), Yufeng Zhao (Future Sketches). A few other Media Lab participants presented their research as posters and/or demonstrations:
- Wedyan Babatain, a postdoctoral researcher in the Tangible Media group, presented project E - LIG: Laser-Enabled Fabrication of Flexible Printed Electronics with Integrated Functional Devices.
- Lingdong Huang, a PhD student in the Future Sketches group, presented a poster for the project Dither: A New Programming Language for Creative Coding.
- Cedric Honnet, a PhD student in the Responsive Environment group, demonstrated the FiberCircuits project: A Miniaturization Framework To Manufacture Fibers That Embed Integrated Circuits.
Finally, multiple Media Lab graduates who are now professors also gave talks:
- Dr. Pat Pataranutaporn, who got his PhD from Fluid Interfaces, presented his vision for his Media Lab research group "Cyborg Psychology" and for the Advancing Humans with AI Program (AHA).
- Dr. Xiao Xiao, an alum from the Tangible Media Group, also presented the new vision of her "Human Learning Group" at IFT, and gave a Theremin performance.
- Dr. Yun Choi, another alum from the Tangible Media Group, presented her new research group, the wOw lab (Willing Objects, Wondering).
- Dr. Sang Leigh, an alum from Fluid Interfaces gave a keynote about the Machine Poetics research, exploring explores the messy interference patterns between human bodies and computational materials.
- Dr. Marcelo Coelho, another alum from Fluid Interfaces gave the closing keynote about his Design Intelligence research, investigating new ways to embody and physically interact with artificial intelligence.
