Ilham Ali will host and speak at an event centered on Sudan at Harvard Kennedy School, entitled "Pro-democracy movement in Africa: What's happening in Sudan?"
On October 25, the Military took over in Sudan from the transitional government that was entrusted with leading the country through the democratic transition. This comes after almost three years since popular protest in Sudan was successful in removing President Bashir from power in 2019. Since the military takeover, and under complete shutdown of the internet, popular protests against the military coup continued, and garnered significant international attention, with the US, the UK, the European Union, the UN Security Council, the Arab League, and the African Union all pushing for restoring the civilian government. In this event, we will shed light on the pro-democracy movement in Sudan, the organizing that is happening on the ground over the last three years, the regional context for political changes in Sudan, the global response to such changes, and the wider implications of such movement in the region.
