We are committed to maintaining a welcoming environment and ensuring the safety, respect, and wellbeing of all community members—current students, staff, faculty, and alumni. This commitment is reflected in the MIT Values Statement, and MIT's Policy on Relations and Responsibilities within the MIT Community.
When visiting or working in the Media Lab, please be mindful of the academic nature of the Lab, engage respectfully with current community members, respect their right to participate and work in the space without pressure or repeated interaction. Respect personal and professional boundaries by not unexpectedly disrupting people at their workspaces, and being mindful of their reactions to your behavior.
We do not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment, and we expect respect to be shown toward all participants. Sexual or discriminatory language or imagery are not appropriate for any event or interaction, including presentations, discussions, and associated social events.
If you engage in harassing behavior, the Media Lab leadership may take any action they deem appropriate to stop the behavior, including warning the offender or immediate removal from the premises. Individuals who are asked by anyone to stop any harassing or disrespectful behavior must comply immediately. Individuals may also be referred for disciplinary or remedial action through applicable processes (e.g., Human Resources (HR), Committee on Discipline (COD), Alumni Association (AA).
If you are being harassed, notice someone else being harassed, or have any other concerns, please feel free to contact Rachael Weisz in HR or Alma Jam in MAS. Depending on the nature of the report, it may be necessary to share the information with the Institute Discrimination and Harassment Response office (“IDHR”). Alternatively, you can report your concerns to IDHR directly (https://idhr.mit.edu/reporting-options/reporting-mit/). If such issues arise at an event hosted at the Media Lab, please contact event organizers or speak with any MIT Media Lab staff person associated with the event. You can identify event staff by their name badges.
In the event of a violation of the aforementioned Community Expectations, the MIT Media Lab may:
- Temporarily or permanently restrict access to Lab facilities and events
- Refer the matter to appropriate MIT offices
- Pursue formal disciplinary action through appropriate Institute channels
Confidentiality & Non-Retaliation
- All complaints will be handled confidentially to the greatest extent possible, although it may be necessary to share the information with other Institute offices, such as IDHR, HR, or the COD
- Retaliation against anyone who raises concerns in good faith is prohibited by MIT policy
This Statement is intended to align with MIT's Policy on Relations and Responsibilities within the MIT Community (9.0), MIT's Policy on Harassment (9.5), MIT's Values Statement, and the MIT Alumni Association Standards Committee Charter. In the event there is inconsistency between this statement and those other sources, the other sources govern.
