Abstract

If Victor Vasarely left his kinetic stamp on the 1960s and 1970s, it is not only because he created a visual language which embodied the very idea of modernity or that he opened the way to the movement of optical art – whose legacy is still very much alive today, as evidenced by the selection of artists in this book.

It is above all because he was driven by a vision of the role of art, aware of the responsibility of the artist as well as that of the architect to promote art in the city, and that he thought about creation in a global way. Until the end, Vasarely pursued a single objective based on generosity as he sums it up: “It is nobler to give to everyone than to hoard everything for yourself and your loved ones."

36 artists pay tribute to Vasarely's legacy: Ghizlane Agzenai, Akatre, Verena Bachl, Vanessa Barragao, Damien Bénéteau, Aleksandar Bezinovic, Lee Broom, Clara Daguin, Caroline Derveaux, Djeff, Paco Rabanne by Julien Dossena, Ememem, Malika Favre, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Katy Ann Gilmore, Adam Hillman, Jo Hummel, Arthur Kenzo, Sebastiaan Knot, Anna Kruhelska, Zach Lieberman, Shigeki Matsuyama, Thandiwe Muriu, Nonotak, Olly Fathers, Felipe Pantone, Reyn, SpY, Esther Stocker, Superflex, Alex Trochut, Valentin van der Meulen, Camille Walala, Richard Yasmine, Zimoun and Daniel Zucco.
