Abstract
Two researchers at the MIT Media Lab, Tobin South and Shayne Longpre, contributed to the global agenda-setting International AI Safety Report, supported by 30 nations, the OECD, UN, and EU. This landmark report, developed by over 100 independent experts—including Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners—provides a scientific foundation for AI risk assessment and mitigation. Tobin South led the Risks to Privacy and Methods for Privacy sections, analyzing how general-purpose AI could impact individual and societal privacy, along with techniques to mitigate these risks. Shayne Longpre led the Risks of Copyright section, exploring AI’s implications for intellectual property rights. As the first comprehensive global assessment of AI risks, this report aims to inform policymakers and enhance international cooperation on AI safety.
