Multiple UROP for Indoor IoT spanning Cloud, Visualization, Mobile UI/UX, Visualization, and SLAM

We are working on deploying cutting-edge MIT technology invented by professor Fadel Adib and the Signal Kinetics group. Our technology uses IoT to 3D map indoor environments with unparalleled precision, and has applications in various industries including retail, warehousing, and manufacturing.

What we are looking for: The Signal Kinetics group has multiple UROP openings for students interested in IoT, software development, cloud, and/or embedded systems.  This UROP will be working with a team to develop the technology for real-world deployment building on its latest generation which you can read about here: https://news.mit.edu/2021/robot-finds-items-camera-antenna-1005

Dates: Jan 3 - Jan 28, 2022 (IAP)

UROP 1: Cloud/DB/Backend Software Development

  • Develop the cloud architecture to interface with the mobile indoor mapping device (AWS, DynamoDB)
  • Implement APIs for front-end data access
  • Develop unit tests and testing framework for backend system
  • Develop debugging tools to simplify debugging process and mapping issues
  • Optimize data processing pipeline for improved performance

UROP 2:  Front-End/Web Mapping Visualization

  • Develop web UI to visualize mapping information
  • Develop APIs to update mapping
  • Develop search and query APIs of backend data to improve UX
  • Integrate and demonstration the visualization with the IoT mapping system

UROP 3:  Mobile UI/UX

  • Develop iOS or Android mobile app for visualization (Swift, GraphQL)
  • Develop search and query APIs of backend data to improve UX
  • Integrate and demonstration the visualization with the IoT mapping system

UROP 4: Camera-Based SLAM / Mapping / Computer Vision

  • Work with Intel RealSense camera to do localization and mapping
  • Implement calibration routines and global map registration
  • Develop computer vision algorithms for object detection and sensor fusion

General Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Proficient in Python, C/C++, or other relevant languages.
  • Depending on the project area above, experience with the relevant tools and frameworks (e.g. AWS, Swift, etc.)
  • Excited about IoT technology
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a highly collaborative team
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

DESIRABLE

  • Internship experience with production code

Interested in this UROP position and have friends that you work well with? Since we have multiple openings, we would be open to interviewing friends to work together with our team during IAP.
