On October 22, 2019, Joy Buolamwini was honored as a recipient of the WMC Carol Jenkins Award from the Women’s Media Center (WMC), for her work exposing race and gender bias in commercial artificial intelligence (AI) systems through founding the Algorithmic Justice League, and for exposing “The Coded Gaze,” the phrase she coined to describe bias in AI.

"The Women's Media Awards were created to honor champions for women in media," the WMC says. "The Women’s Media Center honorees set the standard for what media should look like when it gives voice to the female half of the country." 

The other honorees for 2019 are Julie K. Brown, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Lauren Embrey, Laura Flanders, Gayle King, Zerlina Maxwell, Samhita Mukhopadhyay, Maysoon Zayid, and the “You Are Not Alone” Querida Familia campaign organizers: America Ferrera, Diane Guerrero, Eva Longoria, Alex Martinez Kondracke, Mónica Ramírez, and Olga Segura.
