BioX1: Biological Exploration Payload 1

The principal objective of BioX1 is to contribute to future space use of genomics-based diagnostics including sequencing, life detection, and other applications. We are developing the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes (SETG), a NASA-funded life detection instrument that would detect nucleic acid-based life via single molecule sequencing. Here we propose, as our main objective, to test reagents that are part of operating the SETG instrument by simulating launch, space travel, and landing aspects of a Mars mission. Other objectives relate to survivability of electronic single molecule detector chips, DNA-based information storage, food for astronauts (seed survivability), and the potential to create a genetic repository of life beyond Earth. The payload houses multiple racks of tubes. Reagents are stored in these tubes in either liquid or lyophilized (freeze-dried form). The payload is passive except for iButton data loggers used to monitor environmental conditions.
