Lennart Justen

Graduate Student
  • Sculpting Evolution

Lennart Justen is a master's student in the Sculpting Evolution Group at MIT's Media Lab and a Draper Scholar. His research focuses on advancing biotechnology safely, with a particular emphasis on novel pathogen monitoring systems and the development of AI-driven tools for biological research. Lennart's work spans the technical implementation of these technologies and their broader societal implications.

At MIT, Lennart is exploring intelligent lab automation systems that can make complex laboratory equipment more accessible through natural language interfaces. He is simultaneously involved in developing technical approaches for evaluating AI systems in biology and assessing their potential for misuse. Additionally, Lennart contributes to research on improving indoor air quality, including the use of germicidal ultraviolet light for pathogen control.

Lennart's interdisciplinary background bridges science and policy. He holds dual degrees in Physics and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where his focus in political science encompassed nuclear issues, nonproliferation, disarmament, and international relations. Lennart has held research positions at organizations including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and SecureBio. Currently, he is a fellow in the 2024-25 class of the Fellowship for Ending Bioweapons Programs organized by The Council on Strategic Risks.
