City Science @ NYC Climate Week

Exploring New Paths for Cities at Climate Week NYC

Climate Week NYC is one of the world’s largest annual climate events, bringing together leaders from business, government, academia, and civil society to accelerate global climate action. As part of the MIT Innovation Showcase, hosted by the MIT Climate Project, the City Science group will present two projects that explore how communities can actively shape more sustainable and resilient futures.

Both projects reflect City Science’s vision for creating livable, equitable, and human-centered communities in the face of the climate crisis. Each offers a different lens on the urgent question of how cities—and the people who inhabit them—can reimagine their futures.

  • Community Carbon Impact Calculator – An interactive visualization tool demonstrates how neighborhood-scale choices—such as shared mobility, building retrofits, and sustainable food systems—add up to significant reductions in carbon emissions. First modeled with Kendall Square data, it turns complex climate metrics into a hands-on, visual experience that makes climate action tangible and accessible.
  • The Imaginary Atlas, Amazonia – By centering imagination and lived experience, this project rethinks resilience in one of the planet’s most vital ecological frontiers. Co-created with youth, researchers, and traditional communities in Belém do Pará—future host of COP30—it blends urban storytelling, ancestral knowledge, and real-time media to envision diverse urban futures for the Amazon.
