In the late 1980s, Stephen A. Benton began generating synthetic holograms from 3D digital databases. This video features archive footage of Benton and his early holograms, including the iconic 3D image of a green car floating in front of the Boston skyline. 

Benton received his undergraduate degree from MIT in electrical engineering and worked with Harold "Doc" Edgerton. Benton, a founding faculty member of the MIT Media Lab, also served as director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies.
