Abstract

This article analyzes the recent demographic evolution of a particular sector of the Galician coast (NW of Spain). Despite its privileged location next to the main economic hub of the region (A Coruña-Vigo) and its wide coastline, this sector shows a regressive population trend due to a population-based continuous ageing process. The loss of human capital threatens the sustainability of this sector as it increases territorial discohesion. Moreover, it leads to land abandonment and to a depreciation of the value of the land. Thus, the Administration implements commercial activities that become unattractive.
